Danny... I could feel Reese more than hear him talking to me right now, buoying me with all the emotion he had in him. Simeon opened the shack's door and walked out into the night, but it was barely different from being bound to the cot for me. I didn't feel anything at first, not the sluggish rush of what was left of my blood as it shifted from my head towards my feet as he righted me, not the hard hands that turned me over and supported me under the armpits. I did feel the water though, lapping at my ankles, and the sharp slope of the bank against which he laid me. Simeon sat down behind me, put his hand on top of my shoulders, and slowly pushed. I sank into the swamp up to my knees.
"There, there," he soothed, feeling my faint pulse rate pick up. "It'll all be over for you soon, Daniel."
No, no, I wasn't ready for it to be over. I could feel Reese trying to comfort me, feel his desperate sense of love and urgency. I sent it back as best I could, with a little more emphasis on the urgency. Simeon pushed me again, and a moment later the water soaked into the bottom of my shirt, one of the nicest ones I owned, a present from Reese. It was cotton as opposed to silk. I had never really felt at home in silk, but it was finely-woven, delicate and smooth, and it fit me perfectly. Reese said the color accentuated my pale blue eyes. I wondered at the time if he had shopped for it while he was wearing my shell, so he could tell, or if he just remembered that much of me.
My own weight was pulling me into the water now. I slipped further down the bank, feeling long-stemmed grass and pussy willows scratching at my shoulders and neck. Simeon watched and hummed a little to himself. As I slipped further, he spoke.
"Who would ever have thought that I would have to lower myself into becoming someone like you, just to get Reese?" he said contemplatively. "He always liked his lovers powerful, dominant. He likes a fight. You're about as far from his normal type as I can picture, and I really think it lowers him, in a way. Possibly...possibly once I get to know him again, once I get a handle on what Reese really needs, I'll do away with you. I can become someone I like better. Someone with power and influence." I was up to my chin in the brackish water, and the only thing I could see now was the full moon above my head, a blurry bright spot against the smooth darkness of the sky.
"Goodbye, Daniel." One last slow push to the top of my head and I was completely submerged. I held my breath, but that didn't stop the muddy water from filling my nostrils and seeping into the corners of my mouth.
